40% of the world’s population uses biomass to cook their food.
Rocket Stove Aprovecho Research Center
Originally designed by Dr. Larry Winiarski and the Aprovecho Research Center, the Rocket Stove paved the way for high efficiency biomass stoves. Over 10,000 designs based on Rocket Stove principles have been introduced into over 30 developing countries on five continents.
The stove’s central element is the “Rocket Elbow,” a hollow, L-shaped shaft made of ceramic, clay or metal. The “elbow” sits within a metal or brick container and the space around the elbow filled with insulation such as pumice rock. The stove reaches temperatures above 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit, consuming most of the smoke and gases generated by the fire.
In Uganda, Apovecho is implementing a Rocket Stove suitable for the large-scale cooking needs of institutions. In Honduras, Aprovecho, Trees, Water and People, and AHDESA, are developing micro-enterprise by training artisans and vendors to build and sell Rocket Stoves.
PROLENA EcoStove
Aprovecho Research Center, Trees Water People, PROLENA Nicaragua
The PROLENA EcoStove is the continued evolution of Rocket Elbow technology. Born out of a partnership between Trees, Water & People, Aprovecho Research Center and PROLENA Nicaragua, the portable EcoStove is mass-produced in a factory in Managua, Nicaragua. In the past four years over 4,000 EcoStoves have been produced and installed across Nicaragua. The EcoStove model has been replicated in countries throughout Latin America.
One of the first groups of to take advantage of the EcoStove were tortilla makers in Managua, poor women who make thousands, of tortillas a day over open fires. These urban dwellers buy costly wood brought from the surrounding regions and by taking advantage of the Ecostove’s efficiency, have increased their earnings considerably.

GreenHeat and RPTES
The Millennium Gelfuel Initiative (MGI) was launched by the World Bank (RPTES Program and “Development Marketplace Program”) as a public-private partnership to develop a low cost, safe and clean household cooking fuel for Africa. The MGI is dedicated to developing a locally based, renewable energy production model for African countries while promoting rural and agricultural development, reducing dependence on traditional woodfuels and providing viable alternatives to imported modern fuel.
This particular Millennium Gelfuel stove is a low-cost single burner model. In order to reach as many people as possible, regardless of economic wealth, the MGI developed stove designs ranging in price from $ 2 US to $12 US.

Greenheat “One-Meal-Energy Pack” (Gelfuel)
GreenHeat and RPTES
Millennium Gelfuel is made from ethanol produced through the fermentation and distillation of sugars or starch crops. Retail price of Gelfuel lies as low as $0.30 US per liter making Gelfuel not only significantly cleaner burning than other fuels, but cost competitive . Gelfuel can be produced in nearly all African countries, contributing towards energy self-sufficiency. To date, governments of more than 15 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia have expressed interest in the local production and marketing of gelfuel.
The “One-Meal-Energy-Pack” contains enough fuel for a typical family to cook one full meal. This pack combined with a low-cost stove gives nearly any family access to the same quality (cleanliness, energy efficiency) of energy service provided by more expensive fuels and stoves.
Kenyan Jiko Improved Ceramic Stove with Millennium Gelfuel Burner
RPTES, GreenHeat
The Jiko Improved Ceramic Stove was developed by the Kenya Renewable Energy Development Programme and is currently used by over half of all urban households in Kenya. The Jiko directs up to forty percent of flame heat into the cooking pot. Traditional stoves function at twenty percent while open fires work at efficiencies of ten percent. The Jiko concept has been successfully replicated across the developing world.
This particular stove has been retrofitted with a Millennium Gelfuel burner. MGI modular gelfuel burners range in price from $0.50 US to $4 US and fit a wide range of existing African cooking stoves. Retrofitting is key to increasing access to Gelfuel as households do not need to purchase a new gelfuel stove to take advantage of gelfuel technology.
