The Artangel Longplayer Conversation: Bruce Mau and David Adjaye

February 13, 2007, 7 p.m.; London, UK

The Artangel Longplayer Conversation invites two cultural leaders, aware of each other’s work but never having met, to engage in a discussion inspired by the philosophical premise of a project which unfolds, in real time, over the course of a millennium. The inaugural conversation, in 2005, paired Laurie Anderson and Doris Lessing.

The second conversation melds the vision and inspiration of Canadian design innovator Bruce Mau with the ingenuity of one of the UK’s leading architects, David Adjaye.

Commissioned and produced by Artangel, Longplayer is a thousand-year musical composition devised by artist Jem Finer to play continuously and without repetition from 31 December 1999 to 31 December 2999. Forming the core element of an installation situated in East London’s Trinity Buoy Wharf, Longplayer can arguably claim to be the longest ever performing piece of music. Taking over four years to compose, it grew to encompass areas as diverse as physics, architecture, history, space, cults and religions, digital music theory, mechanics, the science of sound, artificial life, complexity and time.
